Open Source validated for the U.S. Navy by OSSI and Olliance Group. Research conducted by Olliance Group for OSSI forms foundation of current open source policy of the Department of The Navy. Palo Alto, CA - June 11, 2007 - The U.S. Department of the Navy (DON) has defined its position on the use of open source software based in part on the foundational study conducted by Olliance Group for the Open Source Software Institute (OSSI). The Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command’s Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) collaborated on the multi-phase study by OSSI as part of a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (NCRADA-01-008). Olliance Group led the technical team to assess the use and impact of open source systems implemented at NAVOCEANO. The results showed the use of open source software at NAVOCEANO was widespread and would likely continue to increase as legacy systems were replaced. The projected metrics for two of the open source platform case studies show IRR of up to 900% and ROI of up to 833%. Andrew Aitken, co-founder and managing partner of Olliance Group stated that “Our work with OSSI and NAVOCEANO has been important in the further definition and refinement of the importance of open source software in the most diverse and demanding of environments.“ “We showed that open source systems perform well and we recommended expanding the migration of open source systems to other critical areas including data warehouse, web server and satellite data systems” Mr. Aitken continued. John Weathersby, executive director of OSSI cited the work by Olliance Group as “critical and objective work that quantified the value and potential of open source in the public sector. These implications carry over to the private sector as well.” Mr. Weathersby further stated that “This initial work with Olliance Group was a foundational element for the U.S. Navy’s recently released policy for open source software.” Links related to the study can be found at the OSSI website http://www.oss-institute.org./ About Olliance Group For additional information, please visit the Olliance website at http://www.olliancegroup.com/.
